I am not ripping on you Tom, but you aren't the most attentive person, so you are probably more likely to go down. I would stick with something pretty docile. Even the newer 600's are pretty serious machines. You want something that is surefooted and not twitchy, just in case you make a stupid move, it won't bite you in the ass. I would look at a Suzuki SV650S. Pretty good looking bike, it is light, nice torquy V-twin, and it handles very good. It is a great first road bike. If you want a full crotch rocket, look at a 98+ Yamaha YZF600 (not the R6). They look really nice, but are a little more laid back that the new bikes.

As for websites, check out Autotrader.com, they have a bike one too. 2wf.com also has a really good classifieds section, as does motorcycle.com
