That one time to 9k was the only time I took it over 7k, and I didn't realize it was that high until I looked down (merging onto the interstate). I am not doing a light break-in though. The cylinders on modern motorcycles aren't like a car cylinder. They are plated on the inside with a special coating. This coating is extremely smooth and doesn't allow for good ring sealing if broken in too easily.
I have been doing a lot of hard pulls up to ~7k and then engine braking back down to 3k rpm. This method has gained a lot of popularity in the last couple of years:
