How old is your laptop? For example, my desktop (purchased 8/02) is too old to be running 2.0. Is it one continual connection that causes your laptop to crash or have you tried different things? The reason I'm asking is because it may be that you're trying to connect to something which requires USB 2.0 and since you're not running 2.0, it's crashing your computer. (At least that's how I've understood what some of the latest USB devices can do, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong though.)
