So you got stopped for no reason, but you were suspended??? I thing you answered your own question. If they ran your plates (which they probably did as a measure of officer saftey so they have your info saved on their MDT (computer) in case they don't make it back to their car) and you came back suspended, then you will get stopped. They need no further reason (PC) to stop you.
You remember what you just said about cops the next time your car or house gets broken into, or you get shot, or you or your family gets hurt, or you get in a bar fight and get your ass kicked.... etc.
