I am the same way. I will first ask if they can send C.O.D. It only costs us about an extra $10. It takes them a little longer to get their money. Anything over $75 or $100 i will generally want to do the business outside of email with phone calls. For anything over that same amount I will generally ask if they can fax me a copy of their drivers license or utility bill of some sort. Also look at the domain name of thier email. If it's like a hotmail or yahoo account, it will be harder to track them, but if it's like
jdoe@ibm.com, It would be easier to track them down. If they won't give you the information i listed above, do your business elsewhere. It's that simple.
Another you can do is ask them if they have an ebay account. Send a message to that account and see if they reply back to it. If they do, it is their account. Then look to see what kind of feedback they have.
For high dollar transactions, i'd highly recommend all of the above.
