I have had similar problems before. If you drove on it with it not all the way in you have propably junked it. Putt it out and make sure the lock ring is still in good shape. they are easily ruinined. If it is jammed into the groove it is bad, if there are markes around the groove, it is bad. Take it out and look at it and make sure there isn't any damage as well as making sure it is the right axel.
