I've only had to do it here a few years ago when it came to testifying in a hearing for custody of my step daughter. And I had to put my hand on the bible.

To an extent I can fully see why there needs to be something else to swearn on or like you said. As i know my step daughters real father is an atheist and he had no problems lieing on the stand because he didnt believe in the bible. Was just a good thing I did my home work and was prepared to catch him in his lies.

And although I stand for what the bible says. I also have seen so many versions of the bible (the only one id ever truly trust is the first one ever written, which I've never seen) the rest like posted in other threads could have been changed to suit personal needs over time.
