I researched taking the heater core out of my car for a while. What I found (at least with 1g's is that if you just block everything off, the coolant can no longer circulate unless you loop the lines somewhere. Might not be your issue, but worth looking in to. I was planning on putting the heating system back in. I'm like steve now a days I like prefer driving comfortably. The parts are cheap and I plan to buy all of it when I go to get the interior. Then it'll just be a matter of finding the time to do it all.
