I didn't have insurance on the old trailer. The towing vehicle covers liability for the trailer, so no requirement to insure it if. I did have plans on insuring the new trailer, due to it having a much higher value, but I didn't do it quick enough.

No such luck on cargo trailers, this can work on an automobile. Still from what I read it's not very clear with autos either.
