I would guess the torque converter. The cadillac I had a while back did the same thing sometimes. I would be getting on the freeway and strp on it. The car would do nothing. I would get back on it and it would go. Also, the neon I had had a bad torque converter. It stripped out causing a fluid leak. The car drove fine most of the time though. Just had to keep her full. There is not really a way to adjust an auto tranny. Everything is pretty much in line unlike a manual where everything is put in place with the clutch and shifter.
If you are able to do a tranny flush yourself, I would do that. It will most likely not fix your problem but it will limit it to the tranny internals (tq converter, bands, etc.). It is most likely not your fault unless you were the one who bought a Ford. My moms Taurus tranny bucks into second gear every time it shifts.
