You don't need an engine hoist to pull an engine. Just pull the head---> the tranny---> and then the block. I have used this method twice so far. Once at the junk yard and we just finished doing it today on James' 2g. Damn, a 2g block must weigh more than a 1g. Me and remy did it together at U pull R parts (2003eclipse saw us I think) in the winter. Today it took 3 of us to get it out (me, remy, and iceman) and we took it out the bottom. I am not sure how good this method is in installing an engine though. Haven't had to yet . We may end up buying a hoist soon anyhow.
