Old Post but I just wanted to reply because I was thinking of these on my car for a while

First I have been looking for a set for a while and I haven't found a set of FD rims, they must be snatched up by DSM people. if anyone has a idea on where to find them lmk

2nd brakes are a important influence. what size brakes are you going to have? and will they fit into 16" rims

If you are SERIOUSLY going into auto cross, I would say get yourself some FD rims and some hoosiers for auto X. Go with smaller diameter tires. Smaller tire means higher gear ratio once you think about. You are only going to be using 1st and 2nd and might as well have those two gears quick as possible.

This is what I have heard works best
