To weaken or change the metals structure, you would have to heat it much higher and much longer to do anything to it, also when you get into tempering and such, the way it cools down is also a huge part.

I read on a couple metallurgy/engineering/machining sites about this and while it can/does happen it probably isn't necessarily something to worry about. I'd personally just rather err on the side of caution and use a lower temp application with a short heat and cooling cycle.
