The inspection plate is your friend. See if there's oil in there.
I don't think there's any way around pulling the tranny to fix this. Every possible reason for clutch slippage requires it. If there's one thing I've learned in the past year, it's that if your shit leaks, fix it when it's easiest. If you knew it was leaking, why would you not deal with it when you already had the tranny off?
