Just make sure everything is clean as hell. The hard part is getting in all the little nooks and shit to get dirt and grime out. If you're just doing it in black again, I'd just shoot some automotive grade black spraycan shit, and be done with it. It's not really a high traffic, frequently touched and rubbed spot on the car really, and it's going to get dirt and shit from the road in there anyways. plus if you're going to clear coat it and put a shitload of time and effort into it, It's still more than likely going to get scratched and dinged up anyways when you're working on it. Anything I've ever done on the inside of an engine bay has just been a coat or 2 of some regular old spraycan stuff with no clearcoat, and has been just peachy (I've also only sprayed over with the same color too though).
