thrust bearing..

Im trying to set the thrust bearing, so i read the procedure in the haynes manual on how to check for crank shaft end play, but is that the same thing as setting the thrust bearing?
You check the end play with a dial indicator, and the thrust bearing with a feeler gauge. arent you checking the same things?? just in different ways??(I have brand new crank and rod ACL bearings..)
