Creating a vacuum is the purpose of these things; if anything, they'll reduce oil consumption, not increase it. A plugged breather hose would cause a crankcase vacuum in certain circumstances, but also crankcase pressure in others. I'm guessing the increased oil consumption is from the pressure periods.
