Because when they do line up correctly, they will each be 4.5-5 deg out of time with the crankshaft. What you are missing is the reason why it's different. The timing belt for the 2.4L has one (1) extra tooth on it to make up for the higher deck the 2.4L has. Not two (2) extra teeth. Two extra teeth would make it easy and they would line up correctly. But you are having to split the difference of one tooth. So depending on which side of that one tooth you line it up on will make the difference. Now do you get it?
