i hope everything turns out good for your family.
I was in same/similar situation about 2 years ago exactly, found out my father had cancer and that he had no more than 6 months.. they were right on the button. he died 5 1/2 months later.
i had to fill in the big shoes and it is tough, very very tough, this is my second year filling instead of my father and i can't tell you how many times i've lacked his support.
What i would suggest is to try to spend as much time with him as possible and with your family. If you are not already living with them, move back in and stay with them. That will mean A LOT to him seing that you are stepping up to the plate!!!
Im still learning as i go, but i hope you do not end up following my footsteps and i hope your father recovers quickly and fully!!!
