We swapped them out at my old job, and Even with the metal head, I never once scratched a rim. It's all on the operator of the machine. You just need to adjust the head on the machine to be spaced from the rim correctly.

Exactly, I was also refering to the plastic inserts that go on the rim clamps. If they are used there is no way to scratch a rim aside from dropping it.
We can also us the lug centric adaptors when balancing so you dont have to worry about scratching the wheel with cones.
