I dont think any of the numbers are really even visible on the top of the piston anymore. It still has good compression and the wall looks fine. His uncle is also supposedly a dsm guy and couldn't do a 6 bolt in a 2g swap either because they are too difficult. I wouldn't really believe him.

Detonation will blow the ring lands. Check that, otherwise, if the piston tops don't have any holes, they just get peppered, no biggie.
