Well, technically it isn't. The reason it is said to be a gateway drug is because of the lifestyle of the people surrounding it. There is no physical link between smoking pot and doing hard drugs. Alcohol and tobacco could also be called gateway drugs, because more people who smoke/drink end up using hard drugs, but not everyone does, so you have to see the other factors.
What made them do hard drugs, smoking a joint, or hanging out with the people who smoked the joint with them, and happened to have some coke/heroin that night. Catch my drift?
Edit: BTW, I'm not a pothead, nor am I defending/promoting pot smoking, just clearing up some misconseptions about the whole gateway drug thing...
