I test drove an evo8 at Brookdale last year w/ my buddy paul and the sales guy in the car. I didn't beat the crap out of the thing, but I did run it through the gears on the freeway and around the side streets. We even cought up to a friend of mine on the freeway, so I slowed down, waved, and then downshifted to 3rd and off we went. It was really easy to drive, but stock felt pretty weak agains my DD at the time, my 20G'd 1G.
The best part about the evo (for me) is that Anna currently drives a Lancer ES, so all the controls and whatnot felt natural to reach for, since I was so familiar with the car. But then, the seats were nicer, and it had a little more get-up-and-go compared to the 2.0 NA in the ES
So basically yea, I say if you're going to test drive a car, drive it like you want to, and let the sales person screem at you when you're done.
Heck, I test drove an RSX a few years back with the sales lady screeming at me every time we went around a corner about how there were cops everywhere and that OH! this is a really tight corner! ... I was like, 'hey, this thing is supposed to handle awesome and be soo sporty...I'm not going to drive it like a ford taurus. If you *honestly* want me to give you $30k for this thing (or whatever sticker was) and wait on the 4 month waiting list, I'm going to put it through the paces a bit.' ...I was so pissed at her and how slow the car was (despite the nice ride and nice tranny) that I ended up buying a my 1G Eclipse
Since I'm so far off topic it's not even funny, I might as well mention Doug Hayashi of nsxfiles.com, who took an evo for a test drive out in Hunting Beach, CA. Doug can drive like no body's business, and at the end of hist test drive, he parked the car sideways in front of the front door of the dealership, just like Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor (in that Viper). Now THAT would have been cool to see!
Howie, screw what everyone says, just go drive every car you'd ever want to spend money on and then buy the one that suits ya best! You will know which one you want after you drive enough.
