In the past year or so Starbucks has been moving toward a "perfectly timed shot" minus the portafilter and human error. The machine that starbucks uses now is the varicimo [sp?] which is well over 10000 a pop! Usually a mid sized starbucks has two of these. So for a restaruant to purchase a 2600 dollar machine is not to bad if they are charging 4 bucks a cup; it will be paid off in no time. Not to say that isnt a hell of a lot of $$$ that could be spent elsewhere.

"Verismo".
Our store in Apple Valley still has the La Marzocco. Our district managers have been telling us for over a year that it's going to be replaced soon, but still no Verismo. Our current machine is going down the crapper... it never likes to pull good shots.

Tom, if you don't mind doing some of the work yourself, our Barista Espresso machines are a mere $400-450, and are designed directly after the La Marzocco I mentioned above. You can even get espresso pods that are pre-ground, tamped and sealed in a disposable filter to save some mess over grinding and tamping espresso from scratch.
