The eye of any hurricane is more than just a couple miles wide.

Most likely could have been a tornado or just some crazy straightline winds.
If, for instance, the eye were to pass directly over you it would be like hell is breaking loose with wind blowing in one direction, the strongest part of the hurricane. While in the eye it would be dead calm, and it would most likely be sunny and clear straight above you with clouds in all directions. After a while the winds would pick up and would be blowing in the opposite direction as before with the same intensity.
