okay, the deal is i want a car to use in AZ when i'm at skewl, but i don't want it to be the gvr4. but i also have an 86 300zx n/a that is in terrific shape, but so goddamn slow. i was reading about how easy and common it is to slap sbc's into 240zs and stuff so i thought i would look into it. turns out, from what i've seen so far, that there is a kit to mount a sbc in every single Z car......except the one i own, a z31 300z 84-89. but there are a bunch that have been done, kit or not.

you can get an LT1/6pd engine tranny combo for about a grand if you look around.
so the hard part would be engine tranny mounts, which i've read aren't really all that hard to make if you are a reasonable fabber. (which i'm not) so thats where the local shops come in. would elite, qpr, someone be willing to fab up some mounts for me in the summer for a reasonable price?

i think the finished product would be a fun, reliable car that would probably be surprisingly fast consdiernig how much lighter the Z is than the LT1 donor.

any ideas? i know some of your know your domestics so what say you?

Of course we would be happy to work with you on it. This is right up my alley ;)

Big engines in little cars is a tried and true method for getting decent performance at a reasonable cost. I have seen a number of smallblock Z's over the years and they have all performed well.

yeah, ASU is right. on university at The Village.

Mike, i'm glad you chimed in. i'll have to come down and discuss it with you while i'm home.

You better plan on engine management, a custom driveshaft and a narrowed 12 bolt or 9 inch. I doubt if the factory Nissan IRS can handle 350 ft/lbs of torque. Sound like a fun project though.

I would rather see him go with the 9 inch or dana or even 8 3/4 mopar, the GM 12 bolt sucks IMO. I have destroyed a couple and they lack the quick pumpkin change capabilities. The 8 3/4 is stronger and lighter and you can do a gear change in about 15-20 minutes.

engine management? i was just thinking about using the lt1 harness/ecu. diff wise i was thinking just keep it in the family and use a nissan R200 diff. limited slip, came on the z32 turbos and the j30s and its nearly indestructable. after all, its not going to be a drag car anyways.
