misfiring.
hey guys. 95 talon tsi awd misfires badly at boost. ive changed the spark plugs/wires. thinking it could be the ignition coil, what do you think?
|
Re: misfiring.
may also want to try swapping out the ignitor/power transistor.
could be a tuning issue, do you have any datalogging equipment? |
Re: misfiring.
no i dont. car's completly stock cept for suspension, forgot to mention that.
|
Re: misfiring.
Id test the coil and power transistor. Did u gap the plugs and put the wires in the right order.
|
Re: misfiring.
platinum plugs. didnt need to be gapped. and yes the wires are in the right order.
|
Re: misfiring.
I had ngk platinum plugs in my 97 gsx, stock, and it didn't run too well. I bought ngk bpr7es' a couple weeks ago and accel wires and it runs and idles like money now, misfiring issues gone. Except I still have some sort of lag on spool up.

Re: misfiring.
Somewhere along the line I've read that platinum plugs are a big NO for DSMs. As to why, I have no idea. I wish I knew, anyone care to enlighten?
|
Re: misfiring.
Anything other than the oem NGKs are a big no.

I would get some NGK's anyway though, I have heard the platinums suck in DSM's too. If you are not running over 16-17psi get the BPR6ES though, the BPR7ES are more prone to fouling and are not generally needed unless you are running higher boost. |
Re: misfiring.
Oh yeah and Sway, pleast list any relative mods you have on your just if any. It will help you get answers. This problem will most likely be something really simple though.

Re: misfiring.
The girl bought the cheapest wires i have ever seen. A simple wire change and all was well.
|
Re: misfiring.
So the problem is fixed or are you talking about someone else?
As far as not gapping/checking plugs, that is just retarded. Who knows how many times they have been dropped before they got to your hands. Also NGK BPR6ES (stock plugs) and BPR7ES (little colder than stock plugs) are the most common plugs used in DSM's. They are pre-gapped from NGK to .032 when you need them gapped to .028-.029 in your DSM. |
Re: misfiring.
problem fixed. cheap wires was causing the problem.
|
Re: misfiring.
So what did we learn sara?
|
Re: misfiring.
not to buy the cheapest stuff... what can i say, im poor. =P
|
Re: misfiring.
I'd ditch the platinum plugs as well.

Re: misfiring.
God dammit do I have to start closing tech threads when the problem is solved too? Shut up already unless you have something meaningful to add!
|
Re: misfiring.
Sorry i lied, problem wasnt solved. Im pretty sure its the plugs, so I'm going to go buy normal ones today and put em in. So i learned another lesson - no platinum plugs. Thanks guys!
