T3/T4 5-bolt setup: looking for opinions
I'm looking at a turbo setup for my car that someone has for sale. It's a T3/T4 60-trim turbo w/ a t3 inlet flange and 5-bolt outlet flange on the turbine housing. He's also got a 5-bolt o2 housing with a full 3" outlet and a tial 38mm wastegate w/ dump tube. The turbine housing also has a T3 to dsm adapter plate to bolt up to a stock manifold.
Any thoughts on this setup? It sounds like a pretty slick deal to me. I was thinking I'd get JET or someone to built me a full 3" downpipe to bolt up to it to finish it off. Or, I could just get the turbo and find a dsm-compatible turbine housing w/ internal wastegate, or...whatever else. Anyone else running one of these 5-bolt o2 flanges? |

Avoid the 5-bolt housings.

Any particular reason why? One thing I find odd is, I cannot find much info on them, or anyone else really with a setup like this; is this an old standard or what?

Re: T3/T4 5-bolt setup: looking for opinions
Yea, it's older, but it was the most common up until just a couple years ago. Find out if it's a Garrett/Turbonetics or Precision 5-bolt housing. The Precision 5-bolt housings are much better, Precision made their own custom 5-bolt version based off the Garrett 4-bolt design, which is much more efficient. The old 5-bolt will still work fine and make power though. With an adapter plate mounting it to the stock DSM manifold and a 60-trim compressor wheel, it isn't going to be the top of the line setup anyways. It should still be capable of over 450whp.

anyone know how to tell from just looking at it? here's some pics. I know it was from diamondstarmotorsport.com, and they do both turbonetics and pte stuff.
Anyone have a mitsi-flanged turbine housing that would work on this thing? |
Re: T3/T4 5-bolt setup: looking for opinions
Looks like one of those 57-trim/60-trim T3/T4 turbos that were sold by places like TurboCalculators for $450.

really...so, junk then? Or still worth buying? Damn!

Re: T3/T4 5-bolt setup: looking for opinions
It all depends on price. If it isn't blown and the price is right, then it would be worth buying. It will make power.

anyone else w/ any opinions? Anyone running or ever run one of these?

Re: T3/T4 5-bolt setup: looking for opinions
John ran his 11.06 on a 60 trim with a 4 bolt housing, .82 AR. The .82 made it a little laggy, and it still had minor compressor surge on spool up. If you punched it 5th it would surge pretty good at around 15 psi/ 3700 rpm, boost would fluctuate up and down 3-4 psi, rapidly. There are better options out there, but it will work and make power. John made 532whp on his, but don’t expect that. Should be good for ~450 like Shane said.

is that a sc61? If so, I think I know where you found it for sale. I thought it needed a rebuild though.

Re: T3/T4 5-bolt setup: looking for opinions
nope, this is just a 60trim. A guy I've known for a while that does mostly buschur stuff. This was on his car when he bought it, he ran some 11's with it. I might have to pick it up just for fun, it's a pretty good deal.

Are you not using the mutt anymore? I thought you got a 60-1 rebuilt also.

Re: T3/T4 5-bolt setup: looking for opinions
yea, I haven't done anything with that yet. I might just sell it, I want something that's in working condition.
