Rebuilt Motors

In the last 9 months I've gone through 3 motors. The original 7 bolt in my talon CW'ed at 100k miles (6 months after putting an ACT2600 clutch in, go figure), the second motor I bought from a friend (another 7 bolt) and it died after a month, and the third motor I never even saw... Mike from QPR charged me $1900 for the machine work/core/internals for a 2.3L 6 bolt he was going to build, then he left town.

So my question is: Where can I buy a *quality* rebuilt motor from a reliable, respectable and well-known company. Price matters very little, it just needs to be a 6 bolt 4g63 motor with some sort of warranty.

I googled rebuilt motors and found a few sites:
http://rebuilt.net/Mitsubishi_Engines.htm

"MITSUB 2 1997 4 - 4G63 89-4/92 Eclipse, Talon, Laser, 4G63, FWD, DOHC, Turbo, 16 Valve, 6 Bolt flywheel 228B $1,990 $400 $155*"

-this is for a complete longblock (new pumps, gaskets, t-belt) and 1 year warranty. the $400 is how much you get back if you send in your old core, but otherwise, the upfront price is the sum of the 3 numbers

http://www.bestrebuiltengines.com/MITSUBISHI4.htm

"88-4/92 1997 2.0 U Eclipse, 4G63, FI, FWD, DOHC, 16 Valve, Turbo, 6 Bolt flywheel, WP. See Note †. $2,499 $250"

-again, the price is the sum of the 2 numbers. I don't really know why it says FWD, but it says that for all the Eclipse motors.

Are these "crate motor" websites trustworthy? Anyone had dealings with them?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

There's a guy in Elk River selling a complete 6 bolt long block. He's a mechanic at Brookdale Mitsu. You could probably talk him down.

Pending the final test drive I'll be buying his Galant from him tomorrow or Saturday so he'll no longer have a need for it. :D

I just realized you probably have to be a member for that link to work. Here's the details if you're interested (grammar and spelling mistakes are his):

FS fresh rebuilt vr4 motor $2500.00
I built a motor for mine but I think I'm going to sell car and motor so the motor has all new parts besides { rods } all new
crank rebuilt
pistons,rings
all bearing were replaced
valves and valve guides
metal headgasket
waterpump
oil pump
t-belt,b-belt
harmonic pulley
2G exhaust manifold
turbo heat shields

crank and cam sensor
flywheel has been turned

Re: Rebuilt Motors

It must be Tony selling the motor and GVR4 from Elk River. I sold him that car, he knows his stuff. I wouldn't be afraid of buying that motor in the least bit.

Re: Rebuilt Motors

Yep it's Tony. I just picked the car up tonight. Funny, he said the guy he bought it from bought it at an auction and the first thing I thought was "Steve Hill", but I never asked him because I thought what are the chances and he didn't mention it. Guess I was right. lol

The nice thing about that motor is everything is new and ready to go. It sounds like a lot of cash but when you add up all the parts you're basically getting it for the cost of the parts. No labor charges. I'm tempted to buy it and sell the one in the car to offset the cost.
