engine problems
My friend has a talon that dies shortly after turning on. From what I know it starts up normally but something clicks from around the radio area and the car dies. Bit it also seems as though it only started happenning when its been cooler out but my friend and I would appreciate any help that any of you could dish up Thank you.

Re: engine problems
Could be ECU problem. The death tick apparenly is a clicking noise that comes from the ecu when it is dying or dead(?). I'd say tell him to pull the ECU, and check to see if the ECU capacators are leaking. That is a common problem on 1Gs as they age. The capacators leak battery acid onto the board, and in some cases, it eats right through it. And that obviously isnt good ;) So keep it simple, and just check the ECU.

Re: engine problems
If the ecu isn't the preblem could it be the fuel pump? I do not hear it prime iteself but i do not hear it in my car either and i just have a gs eclipse?

Re: engine problems
How much would an ecu cost someone?

Re: engine problems
The clicking doesnt come from the ECU itself but a fuel pump relay that is right next to the ECU. It is caused by leaking caps in the ECU.
I had the same problems with strange starting issues and once I replaced the caps in the ECU it fixed the problem... The reason the fuel pump doesnt seem to run is because the ECU is messing up the fuel flow and the pump doesnt run right. Replace the caps and then see what happens. (Have someone that can solder electronic chips do it...) |

Re: engine problems
Upon taking the ECU out and inspecting the inside, it looks like one of the caps in fact does have a leak If one were to leak, would the acidy stuff look a little golden brown? If anyone knows what the acid would look like would you let us know? Thanks.

Re: engine problems
From your description your are correct in saying one of the caps is leaking. Is the main board badly damaged/etched?
|
Re: engine problems
the acid is the black crap that's oozing out from under the caps. If the cap area smells like fish, they be leakin!

Re: engine problems
Well there wasn't any stench or anything else but from what my cousin said we got it to him just in time the board had nothing eaten away it looks as though it was a fresh leak. I should have it back maybe by tomorrow or thursday I will let you know it the problem is solved or not.
