Turbo Takes a Dump Yet AGAIN!

Well after a fun friday night with Vassil and Jed helping me get my car running, also some support from Shane over the phone which I really appreciate, everything was going good until a sudden loss of power and a bit of knock was encountered on DSMLink. My last pull ended up being the killer. Pulled great @ 17psi flowing 38.1 lbs/min and then it just let go. No more power at all and my boost gauge wouldnt go past 0. After that I was seeing about 7 counts of knock and my air flow wasnt doing anything so I pulled into the garage and said fuck it for trying to make it to the track today.

Well tonight I pulled the oil pan and everything checked out just fine. No bad rod bearings, main bearings were all good, ran a compression test and it came back 163-163-164-163 so I was stumped. Decided to take the head off to figure out why I lost so much power and was seeing knock. Well as I am doing so I first pull of the turbo and decided to check it out cause something was burning oil. Pull off the O2 housing and the exhaust wheel snapped AGAIN!!! This time right at the wheel instead of at the compressor wheel. So I am not very happy with Diesel Components right now. When they rebuilt it they replaced the turbine wheel and shaft, all new bearings, back plate and compressor plate. Everything seemed as if they did a good rebuild but out of know where the exhaust wheel just snaps. Gauranteed nothing went thru it, all the bearings in the turbo are still good, no shaft play, no in and out play because part of the turbine wheel backing is still holding the shaft in, its perfect except the fact that the turbine wheel was in the O2 housing. If I didnt have an O2 sensor in it, the wheel would have gone out the exhaust.

Now they are probably going to make up some excuse to where they blame it on me and wont do anything to cover it. This kind of shit pisses me off. Not saying this is what they are going to do but it just seems as if slow boy did it and got away with it to the dude with his 20g, they could do the same thing to me and I just got it rebuilt for $669 2 weeks ago to the day. It was done on the 7th, took a shit on the 21st.

Has anyone ever delt with these guys before and this happening or them not replacing something faulty? Opinions/Questions/Comments... Feel free, Discuss please.

I'll post pictures when I get up. Thanks.

Jake

Ehh screw it, decided to upload them now while I am thinking about it. Here is a picture of the new turbine wheel next to the old one (with the shaft still attached). The old one broke on the compressor side of the shaft, new one broke on the turbine side.

Here is a closer look at the turbine wheel after it was shoved thru the turbine housing and into the O2 housing at probably somewhere around 75,000-100,000 rpms.

And here are the rest of the pictures for those of you that are interested.

Re: Turbo Takes a Dump Yet AGAIN!

When I brought my 20G in for a new compressor wheel and balance, they ended up putting a rebuild kit in without calling me or asking my permission, or even telling me. So I went there and explained to them I wasn't trying to be a dick face customer, but I felt that I should get some compensation. And there were very happy to lower my bill by a nice chunk. Also, a friend of mine had his T25 rebuilt there, he slapped it on, and it was smoking. He took it back to them and they fixed it for free. I believe they have some sort of 90 day warranty.

From seeing what people have to say about their work, it seems their customer service is good but their quality is lacking. Just go in there and explain what happened, and be civil about it.

Um... Is your BOV working? Hopefuly your comp wheel didn't get damaged.

take it in and drop it on the person's foot then put the turbine in their hand.

The compressor wheel is just fine, same with the rest of the turbo. BOV also works fine. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow to see what they can do cause paying them a visit is a 4.5hr drive round trip.

Just seems odd that you would break 2 turbine wheels (diffrent spots, same component) with out there being a cause. Has anybody else with this turbo had similar issues?

Re: Turbo Takes a Dump Yet AGAIN!

Well the guys at Diesel Components had a hard time finding an exhaust wheel for it. The company that makes them discontinued the original because they were known for breaking shafts. I guess they came out with a new one that was suppost to be improved and less likely to break. Well as of right now I think the new and improved wheel sucks!

Sorry to hear your turbo took a crap again. :( But good to hear that it wasn't the motor. Hopefully you'll get it fixed for free.

As far as helping you get DSMLink working, Vassil and I didn't do much. :p It was more Shane as he knows how silly 2g's work.

You were still there helping me try to figure out what the hell was going on!

Talked to the guys at Diesel Components this morning and they said bring it by and they'll see what they can do. Hopefully they'll rebuild it free of charge.

you got that turbo rebuilt for 669? i think you should of just got a new one. or something. That seems quite expensive for a rebuild on a turbo.

Agreed. That's a lot for a rebuild when you could just buy a new one of similar qualitiy for 799-999. Someone was telling me about ball bearing turbos on sale this winter too... I'll check back when I can recall.

Sorry to hear about your car Jake. Bad luck just likes you =/

I agree also, maybe get that thing rebuilt again and sell it on ebay or something if they do it for free. Get yourself a nicer more reliable turbo.

Re: Turbo Takes a Dump Yet AGAIN!

Well it originally wasnt suppost to cost more than $500 so thats why I did it but they kept running into problems and soon it was up to around $800 when it was done. I was like WTF??? I would have just bought a brand new 3065 if I was spending that much. Well we talked it over and they said they would pay for half of anything over $500 so they lowered the price a little to $669 after tax so I said ok cause I just wanted my damn turbo back. Shit happens, its a dsm! Now since it is winter I want something bigger anyways so when it gets rebuilt I will probably sell everything... Turbo/Wastegate/02 housing/Injectors

Thanks guys.

Re: Turbo Takes a Dump Yet AGAIN!

So I talked to the guys from Diesel Components and they want me to find a new/replacement turbine wheel and exhaust housing for the turbo then they will buy that back from me for warrenty purposes. I was also talking to Shane about the turbo a while back and he was thinking it could be a SCM61. Anyways does anyone (vendors) have a way of getting ahold of a turbine housing and turbine wheel to a SCM61??

I would post up a thread in each vendor forum but I figure that would be a waste. Maybe I'll give some of you guys a call tomorrow to see what can be done. Thanks guys.
