A Step Sideways

Hello everyone. I'm an editor at CarTech Books (www.cartechbooks.com) and a freelance magazine writer (just Mustang stuff so far). I have a '96 Eagle Talon TSi and a '96 Mustang Cobra (I also post on TCStangs). My Talon is stock for now, but I'm hoping to get an intake, boost gauge, boost controller, and 3-inch exhaust this winter.

Hey, it's a pretty good book. I put a lot of work into it. Like most of our books, it probably has a lot of info that you'd find useful, and some that you already know. I suppose that just depends on where you are in the car guy's learning curve. If there's anything specific that you're looking for, let me know and I can check tomorrow.

Welcome! As soon as you do those mods, you're gonna want to add more... and more... You probably know that. I know people who have bought DSMs for beaters, but they still find themselves trying to add a little more power.

My goal is to stick with the stock turbo and intercooler. I really just want to make it as responsive as possible, faster than the average stock car, and be as fuel efficient as possible.

Well with the stock turbo and intercooler your limited to intake work, ic piping, exhaust work, and some other mods to stay in a reasonable budget.
The stock turbo and intercooler are the major drawback on that vehicle.
Welcome to the boards.

You can have one of the three.

Yeah, I know I'm dreaming. Earlier this summer I was driving the and Talon got passed by a 350Z with a few stickers (it probably had an intake and a cat-back), but I didn't start anything because I didn't know I could win. I didn't know...(dramatic pause) I just want be able to handle something like that. I know it won't be a 13 second car or anything.

As far as fuel efficiency, I opened up the intake and exhaust on my last car, and I ended up getting better mileage than stock. I was hoping that would be the case with this car, too. Is that an unrealistic goal?

Aslong as you aren't driving more agressively you should see better highway fuel mileage.

Your plans for the car will really make it feel different, and actually add a nice amount of HP/Tq. I'd also recommend a different blow off valve, considering the stock 2G plastic one leaks boost (1st Gen DSM valve works great, or maybe a Greddy Type S/HKS).

That thing will get into the 13's easily. IC pipiing or FMIC, SAFC, exhaust, K&N, boost controller and you are there. Is it FWD? Then you might need DR's to do it.

JET, I'm sure this has been beaten to death in some places, but can you explain to me breifly why IC piping adds power? Is it just because it doesn't flex (like a rubber brake line)?

Re: A Step Sideways

Larger piping= more flow, just like opening up the exhaust. Bigger IC just cools the air better to prevent detonation.
