Question about selling a car in MN
Saturday I registered my Talon in Lakeville. They said it would be two/three months before I got a copy of my new title. If I decide I want to sell the car before then, what do you do about the title transfer if the new title hasn't come in yet? I was expecting two/three weeks, not months.

Re: Question about selling a car in MN
You're probably screwed. You sent the original title into the DMV. Even if you wanted to sell it you wouldn't have any form of a title to give to the new owner.

You have to wait if its to a private party. I just went through this.

You could write up a bill of sale, but it wouldn't be official and the buyer would have to have a lot of trust in you.

Re: Question about selling a car in MN
Don't do it dude. I know from experience - sell the car before you register it or you have to wait !!!!
I registered my Legacy 2.5GT in the first week of Aug - STILL waiting for the damn title! I need to sell the Legacy - I CAN'T. |
Re: Question about selling a car in MN
I bought my S2000 on 1/19/05, still don't have the title :D That was b/c my bank fucked up though, it finally got all straightened out in August so I probably won't have it for another month still.

Re: Question about selling a car in MN
Well, it's against the law to sell a car if it's not in your name. I bought the car from someone else and they were out of state, so technically I had to register it in my name before I can resell it. I thought about registering it in Texas 'cause it only takes two weeks to get the title. I really didn't buy the car to sell, sometimes other deals come along though and I just like to keep my options open. I'm gonna be in MN until March of '06 and if I keep the Talon I don't want to get hassled with the out of state plates. Come to think of it, I guess I'm going to get hassled anyway because of the dark tint on the windows. :D
If you're buying a car from someone, it's a good idea to get a bill of sale regardless. I found one on the DMV site. http://www.dmv.org/bill-of-sale-form.php Just be sure to get a copy for the buyer and the seller. I also saw on the DMV site where you can tell the state you've sold your vehicle, so you won't be liable if the other party doesn't register it immediately. |
Re: Question about selling a car in MN
I went through the same thing when i was trying to sell my car. They told me i could sell the car, but the person would be driving around with the car in my name. So i just waited for the title.

Re: Question about selling a car in MN
The state has been taking about 3 months to get titles out for the last year or so. Short of promising the title when it comes, you just have to wait. You should've registered it at a friend's address in Wisconsin, you can get a new title on the spot at a DMV over there.
You are correct, you are supposed to title a car in your name even if you intend to sell it right away. Realistically, since the state is concerned about the revenue from the tax when buying a car and since that amount is $10 on any vehicle 10 calendar years old(1996 or older, 1997 and older as of 1/1/06) *AND* under $3000, chances are slim that they're looking for you for that amount. Not condoning anything, just stating the facts. |

Re: Question about selling a car in MN
I got my Talon's title in about 2 months, Galant title took about 2 1/2. This was all fairly recently. Just gotta wait man. It sucks, but it's not worth worrying over because worrying isn't going to make it come any faster. There's not a deng thing you can do except wait.
