Whistling noise?

I was unsure where this would belong, but when I hit the gas, even the slightest bit, I hear a wierd whistling noise. It doesn't sound to dangerous, and I don't really know how to describe it, just as a sort of low pitched whistle. I was wondering what it might be, if its normal, and if it needs attention?

It's your turbo! Did you get one of those electric superchargers from Ebay?

Without a better description it will be hard to diagnose. I would guess it is something on the front of the engine, alternator, water pump, A/C compressor, etc.

Hmm, I'm not sure I can give you a better description. It's like a sucking/whistling noise. I know its coming from the engine, I'm just not sure where. Like I said it only happens if I hit the gas.

Pfft, I wish it was the turbo! :(

I know this sounds like a smartass comment... Set the parking brake, open the hood, start the engine, operate the throttle by hand and listen to where the noise is coming from. Sounds like a vacuum leak.

Re: Whistling noise?

Hmm, Guess I didn't think about that. I'll give it a try and let you know what I find!

Re: Whistling noise?

That plan failed. Here's a part I forgot about: It only does it after I've been driving awhile. Especially if I am on the highway. So when I went out and did that, I got nothing. Guess this is going to be a little hard to figure out...

Not really. Think about it. Drive the car for awhile, then stop and move the throttle manually lol. It's probably a belt.

Tauni 09-28-2005 03:19 PM

Re: Whistling noise?

But if it was a belt wouldn't it be doing it constantly, not just when I hit the gas?

I'll try that anyways.

Re: Whistling noise?

My car did it when my turbo went bad. i would drive to work (30 mins on the highway) and about half way there it would make this wurring noise. What happned was once the oil got hot and lost its viscosity the berrings did not like it. eventually it siezed up and i quickly figured out the problem.

Re: Whistling noise?

dsmberge you failed to read that her car is not turbo, i would guess that it could be a vaccum leak or maybe your intake, you dont see anything unusual looking under the hood? Oh yea and i have a great idea, get someone to drive your car for you and you can ride under the hood and look for it.....oh wait, thats a horrible idea besides the fact that you would probly be cooked alive its just plain stupid, well good luck with that problem, if you stop down at Mcdonalds we could probly look at it for you>

Re: Whistling noise?

sounds like a vacuum leak to my limited knowledge

Re: Whistling noise?

Vacuum leak, or maybe a belt is slipping under load, ussually teh AC belt slips and squeels under load, but if the AC is off that should lget rid of that cause. Maybe alternator or PS belts are loose and slip under more load?

Check their tension and then check for vacuum leaks with a stethescope if you have one.

Did you put an intake in it by any chance?, that might cause a whistling noise.

Re: Whistling noise?

Erik: Uhh Haha? Ok? Anyways, everything looks good to me, however I am deffinately NOT an expert. Only thing I see wrong with my engine right now is that its dirty. :(

Eclipseturbo: I don't usually use my AC and the last time this happened it was cold out, so I for sure was not using AC. How much damage could these things cause, if any, and how soon do I need to fix them?

Boostedawd: No Intake. That comes this winter :)

Re: Whistling noise?

No i think i started it, but you should probly just check over all the regular maitenance items, and then go over all the intake piping, and exhaust too. Anywhere there could be pressure or vaccum

Does it whistle for a long duration or does it do it real quick?

Is it your gas pedal squeaking? The pedal in both of my Talons and my GS-X have always had intermittent squeaks.

I've heard some throttle bodies whistle when they have a nice amount of carbon buildup in them. The air just whistles past them at certain throttle positions/loads.

Re: Whistling noise?

As long as I am hitting the gas, it whistles. But, say, I stop at a stop light, it will stop, and then it won't just start back up right away, it starts back up after I've been driving awhile. But it's not a squeak. It's for sure a whistle.

Did someone put one of those fake turbo spooling noise makers on you exhaust?

Tauni 10-03-2005 11:22 AM

Re: Whistling noise?

Haha no. But I've checked a lot out on it and I don't think anything is leaking. I'm wondering if its possible that it could just be wind blowing up through an opening in the engine bay. However, that doesn't explain why it does it when I'm pressing the gas and only at certain times... To my knowledge anyways.
