Are DSM's contagious? LONG probably

Alright, I have to drive to and from Chicago every 2 weeks and I manage to do a lot of thinking during this time. Today I had a long self discussion with myself about whether DSM's (or cars in general) become contagious. What do you guys think.

I'm sure Cottage Grove isn't the only city that went from having 0 DSMer's to having many DSMer's in a short period of time. I remember back when Santa bought his 90 Laser because it had a turbocharger on it. I remember browsing autotrader and carsoup looking for ANYTHING that had a turbocharger on it. From old Z cars to 300ZX twin turbos to turbo probes and MX6's, and we even went and looked at a old Z28 "project car". Then we came across the Laser, some dude with a fucked up name and really fucked up eyes told us 500 dollars. We bought the car, and it became a NIGHTMARE. It drove, but was in kind of fucked up motor shape to start out with. Battery kept dying, car sputtered, it was quite frankly a Piece of shit. We had to tow it home, and then the learning experience began. Within 3 months the car had new plugs and wires (probably the culprit to the problem of sputtering, and if I remember correctly, it got an alternator. Then we did the free mods and drove it, well, Kevin being the young kid he was managed to break the tranny. Within a year, me and him could do a tranny in like no time at all. Then I learned about actual Mods and he got a downpipe and shit, and blah blah 13.4@111 on race gas blah blah.

Now we fastforward a few years, and it seems like everyone in the town that was young and in to cars now owns or wants a DSM. Me being in the DSM community noticed this and was like "damn, these cars rock". Maybe it is the same with Honda's and other cars, but DSM's seem to really hold people's attention. Maybe it is the fact that they are turbocharged or that the mod's actually make a huge difference. It seems like 230-250whp is only about 500 dollars away and possibly cheaper if you buy used/get good deals. Now everyone I/me and Kevin hang out with seem's to have a DSM. I can honestly say I am one of the few people that doesn't have/had a DSM anymore. I just cant do it through college as I said earlier.

Has anyone else/town/city/area had a similar experience, where the "plague" just spreads and spreads until the world is full of DSM's? I mean shit, I went from liking neons to loving DSM's to loving anything that has capability of being fast. I am as much a domestic boy as I am an import boy, as I know just as much about V8 performance as DSM/Honda performance, and I would love an LS1, but DSM's are more practical, even if not as reliable at similar power levels. Maybe it is the fact that many people have never experienced an AWD launch and it just kind of grabs you when you get one finally, or the fact that a turbo spooling is just awesome. Who knows, not me, thats for sure.

Alright, enough with my "thinking". Anyone else had similar shit happen? Do you know who got you in to DSM's?

I'll start: Kevin wanted a turbocharged car and found one for cheap, so he bought it, now I am addicted but without, kind of like a crack head in jail.

whole groups of people get involved in these stupid things but most of them eventually get out and only few are left.

Lets see because of people like santa and your self told me about these is why I got into them. I bought one from a kid who thought the engine was shot but it needed a water pump for $500.00 owned it for 2 months and got sick of the problems. Then I purchased santas and that went to hell in a hanbasket real fast so now its porbably melted into pop cans. They are a disease!!!

That is generally what happens. We have 4 here right now. 3 2g's and a 1g. None of which are running. The closest one to be running is getting the turbo rebuilt.

My first car was a 92 eclipse RS , 1.8 sohc. WOOT. It was a complete accident, I didnt know what a dsm was, and actually didnt know they came with turbos or AWD etc etc. I was a tool, anyways- Someone I worked with ( chuck T) said " omg, you have a dsm!! tight!! is it this.. is it that.. I was like " i have no idea what your talking about"

Needless to say, I got on the boards and read a lot. I figured out getting a turbo one was in line. I got a FWD turbo laser.. then ive had a lot of AWDs since.

The scene in burnsville savage mostly consists of riced out 2gs but there are a couple that have AWD turbos ( CVD, me, a couple of friends and some dude I dont know... Im sure there is more).

1- 92 eclipse RS - Tore apart to swap in a 4g63, needless to say i junked it
2- 90 laser FWD turbo -$300, put in crap motor, sold to friend and rebuilt it
3- 92 talon TSI AWD - 3k from Indiep, idiot hit me and totalled it - Part out
4- 90 talon TSI AWD - Ran and drove, used it for part car
5- 91 talon TSI AWD - 16g with full mods, drove it for 2 months, sold to friend
6- 92 talon TSI AWD - Current project, should have it up and running soon.

None of these cars left me stranded at any given point. Who says they arent dependable? I guess I wasnt making much power, but they were DDs.

That is my history with DSMs personally. I got 3 of my friends into them as well. 91 talon TSI awd, 92 talon TSI awd, and a 90 laser FWD turbo. My brother bought a ricey 2g glorified neon.

i notice the trend of owning dsms are growing within the cities. I use to rarely see 1gs, now they are a dime a dozen in the cities. Especially at midway i see lots of 1ga's. Not to sidetrack, but, i always see this white laser, you on the boards?

Re: Are DSM's contagious? LONG probably

where i live no one has dsms. hardly ever do you see any modded 1gs; always riced 2Gs

Allow myself to introduce......myself....

Seriously though, yeah... The DSMs are catchy. I know at one point quite a few of my close friends all owned one. Patrick's was fast running deep 12s. Otherwise, we all just fucked around and had fun. Shit, I owned 3 of the damn things myself. Then we all wised up and I bought a Honda so it could get stolen... Sheesh...
