Unscrewing oil filter

This is a post for my friends 1991 GSX nearly stock. His oil filter keeps unscrewing its happend FOUR times already in the past 2-3 weeks, the filter goes on nice and tight, I didn't think the threads looked messed up, so what's the deal, any clues?

What type of filter? He should throw it away and try a nice Mitsu one rather than trying to reuse it before jumping to any other conclusions.

Is that threaded part that holds the "oil cooler" torqued into the oil filter housing? If that is backing out it would mean that the oil filter would keep coming loose.

I'll check the oil cooler, he's been through two fram ones and I put on a napagold the when I did it, btw do 1gs use different filters than the 2gs?

Re: Unscrewing oil filter

1G's and 2G's can use the same oil filters, Mitsu calls for different part numbers but thats only casing size, not actual thread or seal differences. Since you've tried 3, I'm thinking Matt is right.

This one seems to have a larger diameter than my 2g does, is it a 90-91 thing?

Re: Unscrewing oil filter

The case doesn't matter, all DSM's (and most Mitsu's) use the exact same thread and seal specs. Larger cases are nice since they can house more filter medium and have higher capacity than the smaller filters do. You really can't beat a genuine Mitsu filter for $5-6 though.

Re: Unscrewing oil filter

What is the best method to tighten it back in to the oil filter housing? I am not sure if this is the problem and am wondering what is the best way to verify without waiting for it to happen again.

Re: Unscrewing oil filter

The part that the fliter threads on to has a 24mm hex on it (you will need a deep socket) , make sure that's tight, but don't go nuts on it, I have heard of people braking the coolers and causing oil and coolant to mix. Then put a new oil filter on by hand. Maybe some blue loctite?

Right oh, I just found that on another forum just now, someone recommended 25ftlbs so I'll try that after I get a deep well. Thanks for the help!
