I'm new to MN and I know nothing about cars.

Welcome. Please tell us more about yourself, your car(s), etc... We'll be less likely to kick you to the curb then. :)

'90 FWD TSi. Getting ready to swap motor/tranny into a '90 AWD TSi. And yes, I have a '99 F250 Super Duty that's in the process of getting a Cummins. Pics of the DSM's are here. http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/super4x4duty/my_photos.

I have several. I'm gonna start off with a VE pumped 12V just because fuel is so high. This engine gets ~25mpg in the Dodge that it's in with an auto and 3.54 gears. I also have an '01 24V motor that is getting a '96 P-pump and twin turbos. The F250 has a ZF6 and 3.73 gears. The Powerstroke ran high 15's w/1.9x sixty foots.

yeah, if i baby it with 3300# car, and 2200# trailer, i can get up to 17mpg on 4.10 rear end. without the trailer on there babied i can get 23mpg ... but i average 17.2mpg overall towing/daily on the truck.

Sounds like you have done some research on which to go with. 12V ones are a bit more durable, key is going to be your trany. as in if i swaped the trany on my truck and went just with a better torq converter i'm looking at 30whp 75tq increase from that alone and another 2mpg . i got 2001 dodge ctd 2500
-E

The worst mileage I ever got in my '91 intercooled Dodge was while pulling a 22' trailer with a 3/4 ton Suburban, fully loaded conversion style with a 454 and a bed FULL of tools, roll around tool cabinet, top box, jacks, stands, engine stand, engine lift, compressor, etc., etc. GVWR was somewhere around 16,000lbs. I still managed 16/17mpg cruising 65/70mph. My Powerstroke on it's best day averaged 16/17mpg unloaded and only dipped to 13/14mpg pulling whatever at whatever speeds. But the Ford is so stable while pulling a load, you can set the cruise at 95mph while pulling a small dovetail trailer and a race car and it pulls STRAIGHT. I have a 6-speed in the Ford and I love the trans. For me it's the best choice for all around work/play/pulling trailers/4-wheeling all rolled up into one transmission. With a choice of 12 forward speeds while using high/low range in the t-case (2.76 low range BTW) there is always the perfect gear for what you want to do. I have a LuK 13" clutch too, kinda on/off but still nice. I have spun it once but I had all four Super Swampers in a bind and tried getting aggressive with it from a dead stand in 4-high/first gear. My fault, I was just in too high of a gear. This same clutch at the track went 1.9 sixty foots. Keep in mind, my F250 is a 7,400lb diesel, four wheel drive on mud style tires. Clamping force, wha? Once I'm done with the twin turbo'd, 0-ringed, P-pumped 24v I'll get a clutch from Southbend but then I'll have to settle down 'cause I will definately shatter driveline parts like nothing. I've seen my buddy's twin turbo'd 12v Cummins smoke the tires on the dyno, go over 700RWHP and put the torque off the map. The same truck runs mid 10's at the track...all with a high mileage Cummins.
If fuel prices weren't so bad right now I'd have more of a fire under my butt to finish the Cummins conversion on the Ford. For now the DSM is more interesting because of the gas mileage...and they're just cheap.
Josh, it's not lying...it's street racing. But yeah, I don't know nothing 'bout cars. Could someone point me to the FAQ so I can learn how to check my oil?

Thanks for the compliment on the DSM. Yes, I'm from Houston. Dallas area is my top five favorite places on Earth. Oh the stories I could tell... I'm just here on a job assignment and then it's back to Houston to me, more than likely. Seriously though, I'm not looking forward to the winter here. I have a feeling this winter is gonna suck bigtime for me. I'm used to 100+ degrees and 90% humidity summers and 60 degree winters. What's wrong with you people living somewhere that gets 60 BELOW ZERO? ? ?

I love Dallas. I love the weather there.. I swear i was never meant to live here; I'm not a winter/snow kind of girl. How long are you here for? MN ain't that bad. It's cold and I don't like driving in the winter but its not to bad. My first winter back from TX sucked, especially since it was the first time I had ever driven in snow, but You'll be fine.

Re: New To MN

My assignment letter says I'll be here until March 15, 2006, but that's just when it's up for renegotiation. There are several large projects back to back and I might be stuck here for two/three years.
I've heard the last several winters have been very mild (mild for Minnesota people at least). I have a bad feeling this winter is gonna be rough one.

Re: New To MN

Haha, that sucks!! Last winter was pretty shitty, lotta snow storms back to back right before the end of the season. We'll see.
