Balance Shaft Removal.
Okay, I'm not sure if the Balance Shaft is part of the Internals. But I'll put it here for now. I know nothing about this Balance Shaft stuff and I'll probably be removing it while I get have the headgasket replaced sometime before the end of this year. What are the ups and downs of having it removed or keeping it in? I've heard it was better to remove it. And where can I find the removal kits for this? I was just on ebay and they have some for 6-bolts and I think I have a 7-bolt. I'll double check the oil pan later. Right now I'm getting down a list of stuff I should have done while I have the head out so any help would be appreciated. (sorry if this is in the wrong thread)

http://vfaq.com/mods/balance-shafts.html <---- That shows the standard kit some still like and others hate.
http://www.qprinc.com/gallery/QPRBS <---- QPRs BS removal parts (Turned balance shaft, holes have to be drilled and tapped and pluged, PITA doing in car) Some don't think it's nessasary, others swaer this is the way to go. |
Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
Yeah, I just got done reading the vfaq on it. I dont want to have to worry about it screwing up my timing belt and engine on the long run, so I might as well have it removed....if it's not too expensive.

Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
i don't know what it feels like without them on a 2.0, but on my 2.6 the vibrations are just annoying.

Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
Pros:
Less rotating mass, Less chance of the balance shaft belt failing and taking out the timing belt. Cons: More vibration from the motor, Pretty much have to pull the motor to remove them. Thats about all I can think of so far. The vibration really isnt that bad, if you have solid motor mounts its worse but only around a certain frame of RPMs. Just dont forget to put the nub in that replaces the rear balance shaft and gets bolted to the oil pump gear or chances are your motor will be toast within 100 miles! ;) |
Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
Dont Forget to Loctite the bolt that holds the gear on the turned balance shaft or it will go through your block..... haha

Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
On my 95 gsx with the balance shafts removed and with solid mounts most of the vibration is during lower rpm idle up to 1500-2000. But factory engines differ in balance from the factory too, some more some less balanced from what I've read about it.

Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
I'll see if LSE would do the job on top of all the other stuff I have planned for them to do. Man, this stuff is sending me broke and to make it worst gas prices just got up to $2.69 a gallon for regular! :(

Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
It's tough but it pays off when you get done.

Would something like this one work?

ask chris how much the elim costs from him. And we don't do balance shaft elim's in car. |

I'll ask DSMPARTSGURU about the parts when I'm ready to get it. Thanks for the help.

Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
If you are worried about the BS belt breaking and screwing up the TB then just remove the BS belt! There is no harm in doing that.
Mistu uses the term "silent shaft(s)" when referring to balance shafts. The bal shafts compensate for the torque burst applied to the crank each time a cyl fires. The crank accelerates slightly in the direction of rotation and the engine block reacts by moving slightly in the opposite direction (of crank rotation). The vibration you feel is the motor moving each time a cylinder fires. The silent shafts "dynamically" compensate for the torque bursts so the block doesn't effectively move. This is true only for a certain engine load and rpm though; usually at highway cruising speeds with moderate load. This is so because the balance shafts have a fixed mass and diameter so they can't change their effect with the engine load (just rpm). More than you wanted to know but I have nothing better to do right now! If you want to save your $ for gas, just remove the front BS belt and fagetaboutit. Rick |
Re: Balance Shaft Removal.
I guess that could work too. If I cant do it all at one time, then I'll just remove the belt. I dont have the money to spend on having someone else remove it for me after I've already had the timing belt and other stuff done. I'll think about it and see what I want to do. I dont think it would by too harmful to just keep it as is.
