Need Clutch Opinions
To make this short and simple. My stock clutch isn't holding the power my car is making. If I run 15lbs it will not slip hardly at all, but when I run 18lbs or more it will slip pretty bad in fourth and really really bad in fifth. I don't think anything is wrong with the clutch, I just think its time to upgrade.
So what I want to know is what are some decent clutch kits for decent prices? I have considered just going ACT but don't really want to spend 300+ for a kit since its just a daily driver with average mods. JET said something about Southbend being decent for the money. So are there any other FWD guys that have had decent luck with a certain clutch? Any good deals? Or should I just bite the bullet and go with a full ACT 2100 or 2600? 1990 Laser RS Turbo 150k compression just tested at 140-128-128-142. A little shitty but not as bad as we thought it was going to be. Doesn't smoke at all at idle or under boost. Mods: Ported 14B 2 Exh Mani 3" turbo back with 02 Eliminator downpipe 550 CC Injectors SAFC I Blue Screen Rewired Fuel Pump Note: Tranny shift great and I doubt its a bad disk but I don't know for sure. And it doesn't slip at all in first, second, or third. |
Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I run a ACT 2600 on my FWD. its great exept for the pedal preshure. Ive heard good things about the south bend too.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I have the Southbend DXD It was 330 from QPR a few months ago. The pedal pressure is awesome (like stock) and it holds power well. Only thing I dont really like is how grabby it is but its either heavy pedal pressure or a grabby disk. I love it compared to the 2600. I wont ever buy an ACT disk again just because of the pedal pressure.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I have yet to feel anything other than stock or ACT 2600, but from all the feedback I've heard I will recommend Southbend. The DXD is a 6-puck sprung hub disk, so that is probably why it has an somewhat aggressive engagement. They also have a full faced disk with a metal-backed kevlar face called the TZ series.
Check them all out here - http://www.dxdracingclutches.com/home.html Call them up if you want to work out something custom. They are very friendly and will work with you to create the clutch you want. |
Re: Need Clutch Opinions
Pedal pressure really doesn't bother me. I have drove a bunch of 2600s and even felt how stiff a few 2900s were and they were fine. For some reason my stock clutch feels pretty stiff as it is. Nash says it feels like it has more pedal pressure than his 2600 does. I will check out Southbend, I basically just want some feedback on some of the other clutch kits other than ACT.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I'm dropping the Southbend Rally Series in the 2G in the next few weeks.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I want you to try a south bend clutch, so when my ACT dies you will have info for me. Buy the way thank for the info on the struts and springs. :-)

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I switched from ACT2600 to the SouthBend clutches. I run a more top of the line SouthBend. It's the DxD OFE series. If i can remember, it's about 200lbs. less clamping force than the ACT but the disk is much better. It's better to have the disk do most the work than just throw gobs of clamping force at it which is hard on the crank bearings. I love it and will stick to it.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
The Southbend HD Rally or HD TZ would be cheap. An ACT 2100 with 6 puck disc would be the cheapest ACT option, but still be around $300. RPS makes a Sport series that is also probably around $300. The Soutbend HD Rally kit would by far be the least expensive option.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
On thing about a heavy clutch pedal is that the stock hydraulics from 1990 could fail under the new pressers. I had to replace the master and slave with the 2600 after a year.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I have a southbend DXD/TZ combo. Bascially a DXD pressure plate with a TZ disc with DXD type material on it. It holds awesome and It really does feel like almost stock pedal presure. arent most clutches between 300-400 anyway?

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
Craig, get the Devo Tuning twin disc. Then you won't ever have to worry about a clutch again and your car can make all kinds of funny noises. :)

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I ran a SPEC stg 1 on my GST and was pretty happy with it. It lastest a long time on my little 16g setup. The cheapest i've seen them is on horsepowerfreaks.com.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
Ha ha yeah Shane I will get right on that. I was thinking of the ACT 2100 kit, but for like 50 bucks more I could get the 2600 and that would be all I would ever need and more. I am going to check out Southbend and see. And Unreal I have a new master cylinder already and I would most likely do the slave too. I just had my fly wheel turned a few months ago when I was destroying clutch shit left and right. I should have just put a new kit in right away but I just wanted to go cheap for then. But now I am getting sick of it slipping.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
Mike told me a while ago that you can get a rally southbend for a little over 200 dollars. Ive heard nothing but good things about them. I will be going with a south bend in my AWD.

Re: Need Clutch Opinions

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
I don't recomend anything other than a CFDF for FWD guys. I bought mine used from JET, put another 30k on it including many Rockfalls and Opus sessions, and now its on another car still going strong. Never once did it slip for me and I loved the engagement and pedal preasure (a bit firmer than stock).

Re: Need Clutch Opinions
Damn! I didn't realize that was the same CFDF I sold you!! I abused that thing a bit too, I was making too much power for it towards the end. I didn't let it slip too much though. I agree that a CFDF would be a good alternative, the engagement on that clutch was the best I have ever felt. Extremely smooth and you could always tell when it was just starting to grab.
