Help me categorize a Galant VR4

Hey guys,

This may be a stupid thing to ask, but I need some help. Most of you know I advertise the All Mitsu Cookout in a lot of different places. One of those places is the Wisconsin DSM Yahoo Groups mailing list. Well, someone on that list is complaining to me that I shouldn't have the Galant VR4 lumped into the 1g DSM class because the Galant VR4 is not a DSM. Of course his manorisims are not so refinded as most, so this was his actual e-mail:
Quote:

no one gives a fuck, especially if you have gvr4's grouped with dsm's. no vr-4's in wi will attend because of that b.s. get your shit straight.
I'm pretty sure that most people accept the 91-92 Galant VR4 as a DSM, since it shares most of its parts with Eclipse, Talon, Lasers of that era. But I want to hear your opinions on it. Plus, if you want to add any colorful comments for my new Wisconsin friend, I'll make sure he sees this thread. :) You can call him Acunda.

Thanks,
Curt

Tell your buddy Acunda to check out the Talon Digest. The website/list that started it all! They consider the GVR4 to be a DSM. I would say it definately is a DSM. Too many things are shared to not consider it one.

Re: Help me catergorize a Galant VR4

If you were to make a specific group for GVR4's you would only have approx 5. I think it makes sense to lump them in just for awards purposes. Would I like to have my GVR4 in a seperate group? Yeah, cause then it makes me more likely to win a trophy, I think that's what this guy is complaining about. But does it make sense to have a seperate category for less than ten cars? No.

BTW the guys on galantvr4.org get quite offended when you call it a DSM, GVR4s were made in Japan by MMC not in Illinois by Chrysler/Mitsu. Not that it matters to me.

I think they deserve their own group, regardless of how many show up. They are completely different cars, DSM or not. You don't group 1G and 2G cars together, do you?

Re: Help me catergorize a Galant VR4

It has the same engine and same turbo and is a mitsu. If you ask me its a dsm. Tell that fucking WI loser to RESPECT you for even running this show. He does not have to attend if he does not like how you have it set up. This is "curts" show and I think most of us will respect whatever you decide. If you could get an alright number of gvr4s, a seperate group would be cool because they do look different and all. But the question is, how many can you get!?

I think most people who are up on there knowledge know that the original meaning of DSM is Diamond Star Motors. In other words the joint venture between Mitsu and Chrysler. But those same people in the know generally agree that the term "DSM" has emerged to mean these certain cars that share most of there mechanical parts. (Eclipse/Talon/Laser/GVR4) Otherwise a 99 Eclipse GSX techniclly isn't a DSM, because the joint venture was over in 1995, and after that Mitsu owned the plant in Illinois.

The most interesting question I have, is if Galant VR4s aren't DSMs, then why are they on every DSM messageboard and mailing list out there??? ;) We all know that they are made in Japan, but common, they share so many parts.

Any other thoughts on the subject??

Thanks,
Curt

Thanks, I appreciate that. And if I could get more than five GVR4s to attend, I would give them there own class. But I've never had a year with more than one attending. Some years we've had zero. :(

Curt

I agree with Matt on this one. If you are going to have a handful or more of GVR4s show up, I would put them in their own category. Just my opinion.

Chris is right, if they aren't a dsm, aren't a 3s, then they are a 'other' until more attend.

How about you give them the option of "Other Mitsu", "90-94 DSM", or "Go F' Yourself"? Seriously who gives a crap? This is about getting together and having fun. I bet people like that Jack Hole really make you feel like the time and effort you put into this are all worth it.

I'm still planning on leaving the Galant VR4s in the 90-94 DSM category. If someone with a GVR4 wants to be in the "other" category, thats fine. We for sure won't have enough of them to give them there own category.

I am a little surprised that there are other people who don't think of a Galant VR4 as a DSM???

Curt

Just have an other group to include starions, gaylants, etc. I don't think they are any different but if someone is going to cry about it...

Technically the DSM venture ended in '93, with 94's being the last true DSM's. All 2g's are technically not DSM's. There is more stuff different on a 2g that there is on a GVR4, as compared to a 1g. So why would a 2g be a DSM and a GVR4 isn't? The damn 2g NA's have a neon motor for god's sake!

Re: Help me catergorize a Galant VR4

Personally, I think you should really separate everyone. I hate that my car gets lined up next to a silly car made by Eagle and is considered equal to it. I have always thought this, but no one will stand up with me, separate the classes more thoroughly! I mean honestly, this is the all MITSUBISHI cookout, not the all silly-rip off-look-alike-cars cookout!

New classes:
Mitsu Eclipse 90-94
Mitsu Galant Vr4 91-92
Mitsu Eclipse 95-99
Mitsu Evo 03+
Other

c'mon, of course, I'm kidding.

Re: Help me catergorize a Galant VR4

I have always classified DSM's as cars equiped with versions/variants of the 4g63 motor and mechanical parts. So that includes 1gs,2gs,gvr4s, starion/conquests, evos I-IX. I have also always included 3s's just becuase they are like overgrown 1g/2gs with 2 extra cylinders and an extra turbo. (although v6 instead of inline 6). Can't they all use the same EGR Blockoff plate! (Except probably the evo). Anyways my $0.03 (I think this information is worth a little more.)

*EDIT* After further research, I am totally horrified to realize how different the starion/ conquest motors are. I always thought they were alot more similiar. I got to poke around under the hood of one my friend is interested in buying. I guess i am just a n00b when it comes to star/quests.

Come on now, don't lump me in with those ugly 95-96s and Neon powered 2Gs.

How dare you even compare the 4G63 to the crappy motors found in the Starion/Conquest and 3s's.

Re: Help me catergorize a Galant VR4

GVR4 owners are fickle. If they don't want to come to the All Mitsu Cookout just because the categorizing isn't to their demands, they can take it up the backside. They just can't handle the competition with the much more powerful 1Gs. Personally, I like the idea of putting them in the "Other" grouping.

The best part of the cookout isn't the categories. It's the chance to see a bunch of nice cars, hang out with people, and eat some tasty ass food for dirt cheap.
