When you have a problem with a project your working on, or a paper or whatever, where do you look to find inspiration? When your mind is blank, and your trying to find a way to solve a problem. Do you go some place, or do you look at a certain picture, or just sit around and hope you'll think of something?

Most of the time when I have a problem, I just look around at random stuff, and usually one object will stick in my mind for some reason. Even if it has nothing to do with my problem. If I start thinking about it, how it works, what it's used for etc. usually somthing will pop in my head related to my problem, and I just run with it. That usually works... Usually. I think it's just the act of getting your mind going again that makes that work. Even if it's about something that's not related to your problem, it just gets your brain warmed up and working again, and kind of opens it up to a different way of thinking about your problem.

But anyway, I've reached a road block on the project I'm working on right now, and I've been stuck on this for a couple weeks now. I can't seem to find anything that works well. So I was wondering what other people do, when they're stuck on something, to try and come up with a solution.

If I'm stumped on something I temporarily give up on it... Move on to something else to take my mind off of it. Pretty soon something pops in my head and I start working on it again.

The alchohol thing usually works for me.Not getting drunk, but a couple of beers or a couple of shots.I write huge(10000+ lines of code) embedded programs in assembly quite often, and usually hit dead ends often, but a couple beers and I'm good to go again.I work at home though, thats probably not an option for others if its a work related problem.Whats your problem that you are stuck on?

I personally like to go for a little drive. Seeing different businesses and billboards usually helps ideas pop into my head.
