Compression Test Results

1992 Tsi AWD 5spd 6bolt 139k mi
I finally did a compression test today on my car:
Cold, Dry test
#1:105
#2:139
#3:140
#4:148
Wet Test (capful of oil)
#1:135
#2:155
#3:170
#4:175

No wonder my car is so slow...

This means worn rings right (they all went up with wet test, not stay the same i.e. a valve issue)? Time for rebuild...

No rebuild, just more boost?

Re: Compression Test Results

Sound like you have a plan to even that compression out. To zero.

Wasn't that motor just rebuilt when Blake owned it. (by shindley)

Re: Compression Test Results

Wet test is kinda useless on a motor with dished pistons. The oil just sits in the dish and raises the compression.

Sounds like your engine is gonna blow up! Just throw a 2.4 in there and be done!! :)

Thread cleaned up. Keep this thread on topic from here on out. If you aren't giving sleepydsm opinions on his results then shut up and start your own thread. If you want to know how to compression test your own car then start another thread addressing that issue on your own and we will be glad to help.

Blake didn't mention it to me? I probably screwed it up though.

Re: Compression Test Results

It isn't *that* bad except for #1. The engine has to be at full operating temp to get accurate results. Drive the car around for 20 mins and try it again.

Re: Compression Test Results

yah we def didnt do that. we'll try it again and post up new ones.

Re: Compression Test Results

Glad someone said something about that, it should'd do anything to even out the cylinders though which is actually the bigger issue. Like Shane mentioned, the wet test is somewhat tricky with any dish to the pistons. there is typically .300 above the ring to the crown that oil can ride in without going into the center, but it is a bit tricky to get it in there accurately. I have a few tricks to do it, stop by the shop and I can tell you how if you like.

Re: Compression Test Results

I will let you know what kind of difference lower compression makes. I will be testing on a car with (4-1) 140-140-130-90.

Re: Compression Test Results

Sounds good. I am redoing the compression test tomorrow, at operating temp just for shits.

SLEEPYDSM's new test numbers:
1-120
2-130
3-150
4-150
Rings? Headgasket? Is his next step a leakdown test?

Re: Compression Test Results

Run 'er til she blows! It is probably valve seals or rings though.

Re: Compression Test Results

Ehh, I've seen much worse. I'd leave it and continue driving it as it sits unless you want to be super picky. Boost makes up for compression loss...
