Ebay clutches, anyone try?
 

Ok so this is the deal. I have a '95 TSi slightly modified, but maybe pushing 230-40hp right now. I plan on racing in a few times at BIR this year (I went the opener) and overall I would like one that grabs a little more than stock. I am currently running a stock clutch, and it is slipping under good throttle. I noticed it quite a bit at the track, but even on street driving is slips a little. I would like an upgrade from stock, yet don't need an ACT 2600.

I browsed ebay and found of course the ACT models, 2100 probably wouldn't be bad for my application. Also came across an Exedy which is apparantly "stage 1" hehe, in otherwords a slight upgrade from stock for like $220. Of course the Clutchmasters starting at like $350.

Now the question: Anybody try the "Pro Clutch" ebay ones? Basically they have standard to a "race" clutch, which are like buy it now for $195. Yes, I know sometimes brand name is better, but it is not always true. And for my application, in which like I said I won't be building to more than 300hp likely, saving a couple hundred on clutch would be nice. (Do my suspension then) :P

Anybody have any comments on these ebay clutches, or even the Exedy? I actually I'm leaning toward this one as it is a known name. Thanks!

Don't use a ACT 2100 lbs with a napa disc, I got pictures of the results, lets just say the disc was 1 piece when put in, it came out in 4, after 2-3 months, 4 thousand miles...

although I have hte 2100lb ACT, and It works really well, grabs good and I trap 106mph (AWD) in the quarter so like 280-290whp.

Talk to QPR, they have a line of southbend clutches. The close to stockish clutch is quite cheap. The full on 2600 style without the hard pedal pressures are like 330.

Thanks guys, I do plan on talking to QPR, I figured they might have what I'm looking for and are in the know about replacing them.

I used the Exedy stage one kit (1940 lbs PP/organic disc) in my Galant last year. I liked it. It held my 12.34 @ 109 OK. At that point it was a little weak for the application and I couldn't really slip it off the line or it would go up in a stink. It would still hold though.

Now I am using the same pressure plate with a Southbend DXD-F disc. It's a 6 puck feramic disc. I really like it. It's not as smooth as a street disc, but no where near intolerable. It isn't as forgiving as a street disc, to be smooth you NEED to pay attention to how you are working it. And from time to time, even when you are paying attention, it will chatter a little bit. Something a passenger might notice, but nothing that would have them going WTF was that?

That's what I am using right now. I would reccomend the stage one Exedy kit for you right now. Or something from Southbend if you are willing to spend a bit more.

Welp, I ordered and Exedy one which has a slightly better grab over stock. That will work with my setup. At least for now. :)

Definately check on the SouthBend clutch. I have the DxD OFE clutch. it's made for alot of HP but they have other ones for your practical purpose. SouthBend builds a better disk than ACT therefore requiring less clamping force which is hard on the crankbearings.
