Rewiring a 190 with 4 gage wire

Hey DSMers I got a quick question.
I am going to install a 190 fuel pump in my car soon and I want to rewire it.
The question is I have a really thick wire running from the battery to the trunk from a previous owner who had a amp back there. I think the wire is like 4 Gage it's pretty heavy duty!!
Would there be any problems with using this wire for my fuel pump. I don't want to wreck anything.

That wire is a lot heavier gauge than needed of course, but it will be just fine for powering the fuel pump.

Ya that is some seriously thick cable for the pump. I personally would just redo it with something not so thick. I used 16ga on my Eclipse. What is the ideal size if anyone knows??

There shouldn't be any problems with that, but as a side note. In the future if you plane on putting an amp in for whatever reason, I would recommend using a different wire, Or just run some 10 guage for your pump

Yea it will work but there will be voltage drop from the 4 guage cable down to where to splice it into the stock wiring, no big deal, it happens with all rewires but there really 4 guage is way overboard. 16 gauge is pretty much what stock is so you dont want that either. All the VFAQ's say to use around 12-10 guage wiring, which is what I used.

I agree, 10 guage is as big as you need to go, unless you get into a crazy pump. I believe the stock wire is 18 guage, so going to 16 guage didn't do much good.

Side note about the 190. I unknowingly had a 190(non-rewired) in my car(many years ago ordered a 255 from Buschur... at the time didn't know the part # difference, obviously was sent a 190...) made 398whp before it ran out of fuel. So I'd say a safe limit on those is in the 350ish range whp. just a FYI.

thanks for all the help guys I will just use the thick wire then.
Dsmtuners don't reply to my posts at all!!!
I am going to be going with an Evo III 16g so I think the 190 will be good

At a length of 10 foot and a current draw around ~20 amps.The voltage drop for 18 AWG is about 1.3 volts.For 16 AWG its about .8 volts, 14 AWG = .5 volts, 12 AWG = .3 volts, 10 AWG = .2 volts, and 4 AWG = .05 volts.

The difference between 18 AWG and 16 AWG is actually rather large, but I agree, 10 AWG is the best way to go
