HKS 272's

Well i pretty much said f**k it and ordered HKS 272's. I spent about 2 weeks of dicking around trying to find great reviews on about 3 other makes. I guess for the extra $120 or so, it's a good feeling not to think about the research anymore. I spend an incredible amount of time researching stuff.

Question: These are not predrilled and tapped. Does anyone have a how-to for that? I guess like drill size, tap size, how deep, etc.. Also what's the best way to center it? Does everyone do it in a lathe and horizontally drill it.

Thanks for the help!

Why aren't they? I've never even heard of that. Doesn't sound like something I'd want to do to such an important and expensive part, but good luck.

They don't come drilled for 97-99s from HKS.

Take the CAS bolt and the intake cam to a machine shop, they should be able to do it for you.

Re: HKS 272's

That makes sense. I thought he was refering to the cam gear holes. That'd be pretty retarded to sell somebody a pair of HKS 272 cams without that.

Would it be easier to switch to a 95-96 CAS? Although I suppose the 97-99 head is missing holes for the sensor?

If you can't find a machine shop I'd try HeadWerks in Bloomington.

Re: HKS 272's

Are those the "best" performing cams for the motor (4g63-T)? I've heard others but same problem with which cams are the "best" or good ones.

Re: HKS 272's

I don't exactly remember the thread size and pitch, but as ecoli said, just match the drill bit and tap to the CAS bolt.

I drilled mine and it will make you very nervous, one slip and OH OH,......

Oh, and good choice on the cam selection. :D

Re: HKS 272's

Thanks 1ViciousGSX & CDeutsch. I think i found something on dsmtalk about the bit size, depth, etc.. I will verify. My brother is a professional machinist. He's the one that would be doing the work.

I thought so to on the choice selection. You may know that i've been asking about cam selection on here for about a month now. I almost bought the FP2's but so many people saying they're buying them and that they'll post a review and then you don't hear shit from them. They were $595 shipped. I got them from ExtremePSI. They still have more 272 combos on the shelf. So with the 272's, PTE 50trim, 780cc, Magnus, DSMLink, Fidanza, etc, that i all have, this car should rock at the track. I predict about the 2nd week of May before it's all done. Silver 2g GSX, with 19" RH C5's, wrapped in Parada Spec2's. I just can't wait to take it out.

Thanks again!

Re: HKS 272's

Sweet! Good luck with the build. The 272's were a good choice! They're consistenly the only ones I've heard of that don't seem to need adjustable cam gears. Not to mention the results are equally as consistent.

I look forward to see your car in person.

No kidding. The last car I remember that used them couldn't even break 700 horses. They only put out a weak 690 something.

Re: HKS 272's

Well i just got my HKS 272's from UPS today. NICE! Can someone help me on the 2 cam oil seals. The book is kinda confusing. Which part of the oil seal do you put high temp RTV on? Do you put it on the outter circum. of it? The back side of it? Thanks for any help. Please be descriptive. Putting it together tonight after we tap the cam out for the CAS. Also, do you put the cam seal on before you put the top cap on or afterwards?

Thanks.

Re: HKS 272's

Never mind my previous question. I worked it out. I also tapped it out for the '99 CAS. Everything cleaned up and ready to install in the morning. HKS cams look sweet in there. But i guess, a cam looks like a cam.

Re: HKS 272's

Heck no, waiting for someone to answer my timing belt question in the general forum. We put the timing belt on this morning and i just want some blessings before i run it. I literally can't wait to run this baby. Thanks for asking. I will be keeping well in touch with the project, postings pictures and such. I hope to meet many of you at the cookout later this year. Many of you have helped me a great deal.

Thanks.

Re: HKS 272's

I am going to disagree on the not needing adjustable cam gears comment. Anything gets decked, and or a different head gasket is used, those adjustable cam gears are pretty nice. Being able to adjust your torque curve a bit is nice as well. For those reasons, I seriously thing most everyone who cares about performance should have the adjustables.

Re: HKS 272's

I agree with Mike however the problem I have seen with some of the adjustables is durability issues. I have read many threads about certains ones cracking and breaking. What brands are good in your eyes Mike?

CRAIG

Re: HKS 272's

The old fidanza style is the one notable for cracking, their new design is much more solid. I personally like the Unortodox ones, but they are spendy. You do tend to get what you pay for of course :)

Yes! Now it is. I had to figure out if i had an oiling problem but i determined this afternoon i don't. Whew!

Wow! What a nice little lope these 272's have. Sounds similar to something running out of gas. :-)

Now i just have to dot the i's and cross the t's. I generally like to double check every bolt.
