Anyone know about hydrolics?

I tipped my engine hoist over today to adjust the legs easier and after I put it back up, it wouldn't go up anymore with any weight on it. Any idea what would have happened? It didn't look like it leaked fluid. I didn't put it in tech because it isn't related to cars.

I would guess that the seal inside of it let loose. Either that your the push rod for the hydraulic cylinder got knocked off somehow.

CRAIG

Let it sit and see if the seal will "re-seal" itself. I highly doubt it will but it's worth a shot. Are you able to open up the cylinder at all or is it entirely self contained? If you still do not have any luck, I'd take it to a hydraulics shop which has the ability to rebuild cylinders. If you are unable to locate one, Tompkins Industries down here in Des Moines should be able to help ya out. Hell, it may even be worth it just to call them and get their $0.02 on what you are running into: (800)422-3495.

I will see if I can get it working tomorrow. Otherwise I might jsut see how much another cylinder is.

Probably has air in it I have never taken one apart, but I don't think there are any seals that are going to have issues with being upside down. As for fixing it, try pumping it all the way up and letting it down a couple times. (bleed the air out maybe) Also, when it’s all the way up, see how far you can pull it down. Erik D might be a good guy to talk too, he does hydraulics too. And i believe he even had a job fixing them (jacks) at one point.

I second that, probably just needs to be bled.

Re: Anyone know about hydrolics?

You are correct. It has air trapped in the system. Run it and down several times. After each time it comes down crack the fill hole open (where you add extra fluid to it, should be halfway or more up on the cylinder wall) to release any air then close it before pumping up again. It may take several times of doing this but it should start working again.

it did that on me too, i lubed it a little, and made it go up and down a few times, and it worked fine...

Yep air. if it were hooked up to a power source you would defiantely know it also.

I fixed it. I should try and bleed it though.
