2g bumper license plate removal

I'v been woundering how people get the bigger gap in their 2g front bumper. I will be pruchasing a fmic in the near future and i will need the space. If you have performed this on your car or anyone elses please list the way you went about it. Do I take a dremel tool to it or what? And have you had any trouble with the law about not having a front license plate.

Laws for the front plate are different from state to state. For the Liscense plate Mitsu placed 2 wonderful bolts behind the bumper cover that hold the bracket on.

Are you referring to the actual opening to the FMIC or fitting the FMIC behind the black bumper that's behind the bumper cover?

you can cut the opening bigger in the front bumper and make another spot for the front plate. In the cuting you will most likely neet to cut the inside part out and you might want to cut more of the bumper out but it isn't needed. For the front plate, I went to the hardware store and bought some plate fasteners there. It comes with screws and clips to screw them into. I just drilled holes in my bumper a little smaller than the clips, put the clips in and put the plate on. It is pretty easy

you will need to either get rid of the front bumper support or cut that also. It is much easier to get rid of it. I will try to post up pics of mine later.

No bumper support, cut the bumper, and move the plate is the only experience I have had on 2gs. You could also buy a 97+ front bumper with a larger gap in it.

The plate issue is city to city. If you plan on driving uni, you better have a plate. Some cops are just looking for anything to pull you over for.

Thanks for your replies. I took off my front bumper and used a special sander to grind down the stuff I wanted off. I'll post some pics when i get a better camera.

I never used a sander before on a FMIC install. I would think it would be too big or very time consuming. I used a cutoff tool and cut the grill area bigger. It only took one time around.

The plate issue is a State issue actually. The entire state of MN requires a Front plate, but i have found that if you put the plate in the windshield (wedge it between the dash and windshield) then you can get away with it. I used to get pulled for no front plate until i did that, then i talked to a cop and he said it was fine because it was still on the front of the car.

He said city to city because some cities care and others don't if you have a front plate.
