Auto Tranny Problems

I put this here since it isn't really DSM Tech. Anyway, I found a tranny for my friends Stealth and I just put it in this weekend and there seems to be a problem with it. I can put it in reverse and it engages and the car will back up just fine. Drop it in nuetral and it responds. Put it in drive and it engages, however when you step on the gas it is VERY sluggish. It almost feels as if it is starting in second gear possibly... I took it down the road and stomped on it and noticed it doesn't downshift and you get up to about 50 mph where it should shift into overdrive and it won't (overdrive is not turned off). I checked the fluid, it is full and it came out clear when I emptied a small amount out. Jacked the back of the car up and the rear brakes don't seem to be hanging up, so I am stumped. I don't know auto's very well, so could it be a bad tranny? Are there any adjustments I can make? Anyone have issues like this? Please let me know, thanks.

Well yeah, but it's a 3/S, not a DSM, therefore I thought it didn't fit. Move it if need be, I'm just looking for some help.

These cars have a limp mode that they go into if the tcu (transmission control unit) receives an error. It allows Park, Reverse and Neutral to work normally but you only get one forward gear.

Take it in and have them hook up a diagnostic computer to it. Aamco does the check for the code for free.

Terina had this happen to her 92 AWD Talon. We couldn't get a read on the tcu thru the diagnostic port so we came to the conclusion that the tcu was fried. We sent it to a place in Austin, MN (Carney Auto or something like that) and they rebuilt it for $175. Works perfect now. But find out if the tcu is throwing a code before you take it out and have it rebuilt. Could be something simple.

If you can, take it to the Aamco in West St. Paul on Robert Street. The guy there is really knowledgable.

I'll call you tomorrow after work and see how things are going.

Moved. This can be in tech even though its not a DSM. There are a few guys on here that have these kinds of cars as well as a DSM. I am sure Swanny will know what problem you have.

Hey thanks for the info Matchbox. I also posted this on 3/S.org to see what all I could come up with. A guy there told me the same thing about a limp mode with third gear. I went back through everything I did and come to find out there are TWO four-wire harnesses that can easily be interchanged. I switched them around and the car now works perfect (minus a bad wheel bearing). Thanks for your help.
