Remove the divider on the manifold exhaust outlet?

I didn't think this was a tech question. More of an opinion thing so i put it in the parking lot.

I'm gonna enlarge the outlet on my 99 GSX exhaust manifold so it matches the PTE 50trim 7cm inlet.

I was on tuners and i see some people remove that tall divider and some keep it. Some say if you remove it, there will be more turbulence. What's your take on this and experience. I see there is cracks on both sides of it but then i've never see one that didn't crack along the divider.

Keep it or dump the divider?

Thanks

I used to remove them, I don't anymore, there is more benefit from the divider than removing it.

Thanks Raptor. I totally agree. I removed it once too on an old car but now i don't think it restricts anything. I think it directs the flow of traffic from the exhaust more than anything.

I think mine is gone but I think you are wasting your time if you touch it anyhow. It takes a long time to port cast and I do not think you would have any increase.

Long time to port cast? Try porting the EVO3 turbo's once!

Definately do not remove the divider, that will cause a decrease in performance. Leave it there, but you can thin it up some.

I agree, EVO3s suck, I charge double for porting them, what a PITA....

While your at it, why port anything? I bet there isn't any gain in porting heads/turbo's/o2 housings/manifolds......
Just because it isn't fast and easy, doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile.

I agree Swanny.

I think he is referring directly to the divider, not porting in general. I have ported a ton of stuff for the HORT boys and as far as I know, they believe in porting. I think Johns point is that with the time required to remove that divider, if it doesn't make an improvement is probably not worth doing. I am sure that you are better off leaving it in place to direct exhaust flow and segregate the pulses any way so removing it is a futile labor at best.

When referring to the divider on the turbo just so people don't mistake this for that ring that's in the stock turbo. I just had someone ask me off the site so I figured I would let them know. If anyone wants to get into the divider and porting and the rign and all the fun differances and + and - of all of it feel free to post it up in a tech thread in FI.

Re: Remove the divider on the manifold exhaust outlet?

The divider is in the exhaust manifold, that is the part we are talking about. Nothing to do with the turbo specifically. The only divider in the turbo would be on the O2 side which isn't what this particular topic is about. The seats for the fire ring in either manifold or turbo are not part of the discussion in this thread either as of yet. Hopefully that ends some of the confusion.

Re: Remove the divider on the manifold exhaust outlet?

Thanks to all for the overwhelming responses on this topic. I 'have' left the divider there. I just don't see how anyone could think of removing it as a performance gain. If you look into the runners from the heads perspective, a removed divider would have exhaust streams colliding with one another. So last night and this morning all i did was enlarge the hole itself to match the PTE 7cm inlet.

I was gonna enlarge the runners slightly based on a vfaq pictorial but i don't think i'm gonna bother with it. If you hold the gasket up to it, you'd have to remove a ton of material to equal the size of the gasket. I don't think it's a benefit, not for a 50 trim turbo. Some say a 50trim won't outflow the capicity of a 2g head anyway. Heck, Brian(Slowwhite), runs a much bigger turbo that i got on his 2g stock head.
