FWD/AWD differences

My strut tower rust on my car is becoming considerably bad on both sides, and now my doors are starting to rust apart, just out of curiosity I was thinking about picking up a shell down south, the only way I think this would be finiacally feasible is if it is possible to use NT shells. Is this possible? I would assume it would also need to be a 5spd, if i would have to get a awd 5spd to make it work I really don't think it would be worth the time so I am just throwing this up to anyone who might know.

If you pick up a Fwd NT 2g, the engine mounts will be 180 degrees differnt. You could get a Turbo Fwd shell and convert it to AWD, thats not extremely difficult. As long as you have the ability to weld a bit, and dont mind swapping the gas tanks, rear end, and drilling out the spot welds for the carrier bearing mounts for the drive shaft.

Now now you two...

Cher's right though--if the rust is getting pretty bad, there's not much else you can do. I would recommend trying to find at least a turbo shell for ease of swapping.

You'd want an AWD shell, making all the changes to a FWD shell would cost more than the car would be worth if it was dipped in 24K gold.

Re: FWD/AWD differences

Weve discussed this before. I can get that rust fixed for WAY fucking cheaper than buying a shell and doing any sort of swaps. I advise that you bring that beast down to my house so my dad can check it out. I wont be checkting this thread again so PM me if you are serious about anything.

Strut tower rust CAN be fixed. Doors can be fixed and or replaced. Junking it would be stupid. Also, doing a swap in a N/t would be the biggest waste of time ever. And getting another AWD would be a waste of your money.

The last time I had a 2G with rust around the strut tower, I cut out the rust and fabbed up a panel, welded it in and painted it. Turned out pretty nice and not too tough to do.

I would fix it. I fixed all the rust on my car, maintain it with wax and undercoating and some grease here and there to cover spots that might come back and its working well.

Re: FWD/AWD differences

Wow thats unbeleivable. 2G's suck. My car has been driven through every winter except this year and it never had that kind of rust. There is not a spec of rust under the hood.

Re: FWD/AWD differences

haha, another reason 2g's rule.
"Pre-rusted" compared to 1g's.
I think the stealth might have rust on a bolt somewhere under the car....

On a serious note..The time and effort required to swap over all the parts or convert a fwd to an awd and then swap it all over is far less involved than having a GOOD body shop repair it Professionally. Take it over to josh's house and see what his dad says.

Re: FWD/AWD differences

The best part is this. Look at your 2gs. Around the camber nuts...thats NOT a weld. Its body filler painted over. The 'pipe' your upper camber runs thru is NOT attatched to the strut tower, just the bottom is. The top has body filler around it so it doesnt move around much. I will have all 4 of mine welded to the car for more rigidity.
